The Final Frontier as it should have been...
Alienated by the direction that Star Trek Voyager was taking, I sat down to write the first story in what I later called 'The K/7 Saga,' a series of stories which chronicled the birth and progression of a romance between Ensign Harry Kim and Seven of Nine against the backdrop of an altered Season Six, an idealization of love as much as an idealization of Star Trek.
Okay, so it ain't cannon. And maybe in retrospect, it seems laughably out of touch. But to me, it demonstrated that I could write long, novella-sized pieces, and it helped to put my imagination to rest, while at the same time giving my mailing list buddies a little pleasurable reading (I like to think.)

The K/7 Saga Stories:
- I Only Have Eyes for You
— This is the story that started it all. I gave a lot of thought as to how a
Kim/Seven romance would first get off the ground, assuming Paramount decided
to give it the green light. The story begins early in Season Six, between the
times of "Equinox, Part
II" and "Survival
Instinct."
- The Hierarchy of
Needs — The first sequel to IOHEFY and a retelling of the canon
episode "Tinker,Tenor,
Doctor, Spy," it picks up the story of Harry and Seven
several weeks after IOHEFY. It asks the question of how would Harry Kim have
handled knowing about the Doctor's fantasy life, assuming he had a
relationship with Seven at the time. Read on...
- First Comes
Love — I wrote this story to explore what I felt was a gross
oversight in the series. The relationship that exists between Seven and Naomi
Wildman is cute and fun to watch, but we almost never get to see Naomi's
mother. Why not show us Voyager's one true nuclear family? And just how does
Sam Wildman feel about her daughter's friendship with a former drone? And how
would a romance with Harry Kim affect that friendship? I thought it might be
fun to find out...
- A Bright Shining Thing
Called Hope — This was a story I desperately wanted to finish before
the Season 7 premiere, mostly because I wanted the readers on the Resistance
is Futile list to have the truly atrocious second part of the episode "Unimatrix
Zero" blocked from their minds when they read it. Thankfully,
I beat Paramount to the punch, and managed to churn out what I feel is one of
the most dramatic, emotional stories of the K/7 Saga thus
far.
- One Perfect
Moment — This tale follows up on the aftermath of the last story. No
conflicts, no emotional trauma. Just good friends, good times, and good fun.
It's been called by some an 'intermission story,' but I use it as an
opportunity to blend in romance and the social commentary and satire that Star
Trek has long been famous for. Not to mention a little bit of American pop
culture.
- The Way of All
Things — The conclusion of the saga. This story took on a dramatic
urgency for me, not only because it was the final story in my series, but also
provided for me and the RiF members an alternate ending for Voyager. So it was
important that it be finished before the series finale "Endgame.". As of the
moment I'm writing this, I haven't seen the episode, and I probably won't for
some time. As far as I'm concerned, this is the only right and proper way to
end the show.
-
Coda — Not a story per se, but a sweet little endnote to the tale of the K/7 Saga. Of course, if you want to learn more about the future adventures of Harry and Seven, you can always check out Star Trek: Delta Fleet.
Virtual Voyager Season Stories:
This was a creative project that I became involved with, where two whole seasons worth of Voyager episodes were written by fans, and for fans. Although I eventually had a difference of opinion with the producers regarding the direction of the series, they served as a valuable inspiration for the creation of Star Trek: Delta Fleet.
